The Marvels: Why is it Rated so Poorly?

Marvel Studios newest release, The Marvels, is the second Captain Marvel feature film. Even before it was released into theaters, critics and others were bashing on the film and thus, made it to where I did not want to go see it in theaters and instead, wait until it was released onto Disney+. Currently, The Marvels has an IMDB score of 5.6/10, a Metascore of 50 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 62%. After watching the film I rated it as a 63/100 and I will go into detail as to why that is. But first, let's talk a little bit about what the film is actually about.
Summary
The first 30 minutes of this film is the best part. Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau are all connected through the use of their powers and they constantly switch places if multiple of them use their powers simultaneously. As they are fighting the main antagonist, Dar-Benn and the army from the planet Hala, you quickly realize that Dar-Benn is one of the worst villain's I have seen in a Marvel film. I feel like she doesn't bring much to the table and the reason for her going after Captain Marvel is a classic and overused villain story. As Captain Marvel defeated the High Supreme on Hala, Dar-Benn saw her doing this and thought the worst of her and then goes out to seek her revenge. She really comes across as a sorry and weak version of Ronan. But that isn't even remotely the bottom of the pit with this film. Unfortunately, there are two scenes that take the cake.
First, the Marvels have to visit the planet Aladna. Captain Marvel warns the audience about how the people on the planet are different and will know who she is. But nothing could have prepared me for what I watched when they walked out of their ship. The people on the planet do not understand English, which is perfectly normal. But, their native tongue is English, but in song. So the only way these people speak is by singing and it is so cringe. And then we get to see Brie Larson, in a Captain Marvel dress, singing with the Prince, who she is married to. If you didn't know Disney had ownership of Marvel. you do after watching this 10-15 minutes. The Marvels get brand new suits, which by the way, I don't know how the planet Aladna had those handy, since they have never met Monica or Ms. Marvel. Dar-Benn arrives as she is trying to steal all the water from the planet, so a battle ensues before the Marvels split and get out of there as they find themselves on the losing side. Now, lets skip ahead a bit and talk about the second worst moment/scene from the movie.
Nick Fury and Ms. Marvel's family are on a space satellite/ship that is almost like an elevator that goes from the earths surface into space. The ship gets put off its track and is on the verge of shutting down/exploding. The escape pods are not responding outside of only a few so the question becomes, how do you get all of these people off the ship? Well, an important note for the reader is that they have been breeding/growing Flerken on the ship. Flerken look like normal cats, however, they have many tentacles that extend from their mouth. These Flerken, which there are a ton of, eat all of the employees and people on the ship and they put all the Flerken into a pod that goes down to the earths surface. Once they are down there the Flerken start vomiting the employees up. Yes, everything I just said there happened in the movie and is accurate. Sometimes you can't make stuff up even if you wanted to.
Those two scenes completely downgrade this movie and make it a complete joke. It makes the final scene not nearly as emotional as it should be. The only saving grace, which isn't much, is the end credit scene.
The ending battle is super weak and provides very little as The Marvels defeat Dar-Benn. Dar-Benn being defeated produces enough energy to open up a portal in space time. Space time is something Marvel has been really focusing on, especially in the Loki series and everything that surrounds Kang. The ending of the film shows Monica Rambeau in an alternate timeline/universe and that is where the end credit scene comes into play. All I will say is people who like the X-Men should YouTube the end credit scene and give it a quick watch. It is only 30 seconds to one minute.
What's Next?

The biggest question for Marvel right now is, what's next? There are a lot of scheduled projects for the coming years, but all the news surrounding them going away from Kang the Conqueror leaves a lot of ponder and question. Marvel has officially announced the cast of the Fantastic 4 movie with Pedro Pascal playing Reed Richards. But that movie is still a ways away from hitting theaters. I think the most exciting thing Marvel has going right now is the release date and first trailer drop for Deadpool and Wolverine. This movie could be Marvels next big hit, which is something they desperately need. Ryan Reynolds is back for his third Deadpool movie, but this time he is bringing along Hugh Jackman with him as he reprises his role as Wolverine. I got to say, I am beyond excited for this film and will be there to watch it when it comes out. Initial comments surrounding the film are really positive and if it is anything like the first two Deadpool movies, it will be very good.

A big film is being released next month and I will be doing an extensive review and blog post on it. Dune 2, a film by well known Director Denis Villeneuve is already highly rated and expected to be the first big hit of the new year. I loved the first film and think this one will be just as good. I am not going to go into detail on what it is about, but I would highly recommend watching the first film and then going to see this one in theaters. The movies are based on the books and it is a loaded cast full of star studded names. Denis Villeneuve directed the first film along with films such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and Sicario.
